Al tomar posesión de Alicante el Príncipe D. Alfonso el Sabio, encontró una mezquita en la campiña que mandó purificar y la dedicó a San Nicolás de Bari, en cuyo día se produjo la reconquista de Alicante.
When Prince Alfonso of Castile, later known as Alfonso the Wise, took possession of Alicante, he found a mosque standing on this site. He ordered it to be consecrated as a Christian church and dedicated it to Saint Nicholas of Bari, whose feast day coincided with the Christian reconquest of the city.
